2009 Christmas Blizzard

xmascollage
WOW – what a wild couple of days it’s been.
It all started on December 24th – pre Christmas Eve with us Oklahomans hearing we may have bad weather coming in. Most Okies just went yeah yeah, ok, let’s see what happens. We heard anywhere from 1 inch of snow to over 15 inches. I would say most of us were betting on 1inch.

Craig and I had to work on Christmas Eve, actually sort of a tradition. Craig was suppose to work 8 am til 6 pm, I was to work noon till past 10 pm. At abotu 7 am, I started hearing the pelting of sleet on our windows in the bedroom. At about 830, the noise wasn’t stopping, got up, called Craig, he said he made it to work but that the roads were getting bad. I looked outside and KNEW, this isn’t good.

I called work at 830 am. Gotta love my boss Dan. He knows I live out in the country with hills, I asked him about the conditions and he said he would bring me home that evening if i got stuck. We both agreed to watch the conditions and make our mind up closer to my arrival time.

On top of all of this, my mom was on vacation and was in Florida. I already had one of her dogs at our house but because of the ice, our dog sitter and I had agreed I would get the other dogs and bring them to my house. So, at about 930 am, i drove down the street to get them, only to be able to NOT pull up her drive due to the ice. I did get the dogs from her house, so we now had 11 dogs at our place – talk about a zoo.

By 10 after watching the TV, with everyone saying DON’T drive, I made the call back to work and said I wasn’t going to risk coming in. I wasn’t the only one calling in and I really appreciated my boss understanding – boy did I ever make the right decision.

We were also having power outages. Craig got hold of our neighbor and i went over and got a bunch of wood from them to help keep our house warm. It was sleeting hard, two girls trying to pile wet wood in the van, then I broke down a dog crate and used that and my dog dolly to get the wood in the house. But at least we had wood – fortunately by afternoon the power outages had stopped.

By noon the sleet was turning to snow and the wind kicked it up a notch. I just had the news on and it kept talking about get off the roads, too many accidents, State of Emergency. Was in contact with Craig and they had decided to shut down early, he was on the way home by two.

On the way home – - – well by 3 pm all major highways in the state of Oklahoma were shut down. Craig wasn’t home yet, I had heard from him once but chose not to call him because I didn’t want to cause an accident. There is no way to get to our house from Norman without getting on an highway and i prayed he was safely almost home. He did get home at 330 pm, it took him over 90 minutes when it normally takes 20 minutes. But, he made it safe and sound.

We sat and watched the snow continue until after dark. Dogs in and out and in and out and snow and wind and cold….. The State of Oklahoma was frozen solid by a record BLIZZARD!

We woke up Christmas morning to a beautiful white snowscape, sun shining, absolutely lovely day! We took tons of pictures of all the dogs enjoying the snow, built a snow-cardi! Santa brought us Xmas gifts, a bread maker for Craig and the Twilight series for me. In the afternoon Craigs buddies Myles and Tracy had the guts to drive out to our house and the 4 of us had a great Christmas dinner and movie marathon. The roads quickly melted where there weren’t snow drifts.

This morning/afternoon our ground is still covered in snow with the roads clearing more and more. The dogs are all having fun going in and out and we are just relaxing, in hibernation mode!

Christmas was truly a wonderful day and the down time was much needed. Oklahoma is slowly getting out of this weather mess but it was so much fun!

A little Bit of everything

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

Well, Lila is pouting, she is very mad at me right now. Last weekend in Texarkana Lila was awarded Winner’s Bitch/Best of Winner’s/Best of Opposite Sex for a 4 point major! These are her first points and the first one in the litter to earn a major. Thank you so much to my assistant Jessica Riffe for handling her to this win. I was showing Lyn Buck’s Open Bitch – “Cedar” who just needs a major to finish. Cedar took reserve behind Lila. At least is was all in the family since Lyn bred Lila with mom and I! Congrats to Lori and Nathan Drozd on this win. They weren’t there to see it but I made sure to scream and hollar the good news over the phone.

Also, a brag to Doug Rosner and Elaine Hudson – the week after Nationals Astra (Rhodesian) won her Field Championship title!!! She also earned two more of her Master Courser Legs. We believe Astra is the first Oklahoma Bred/Raised Rhodesian to earn their FC title! I am so proud of the Cynara Ridgebacks on such an accomplishment. Now we will be working hard on Astra’s AKC Championship so that she will be a Dual Champion.

Other news, well,,,,, my husband lost his job. That is half of the reason I have been updating everything. He is searching high and low but I do believe everyone understands how bad the economy is right now. I have been working as many hours as I can and when not working, I am in total chill mode. We are ok right now but please keep him in your prayers that he finds a job soon.

The hot summer weather is officially here in Oklahoma. The dogs don’t even want to go outside, anytime of the day. They are true couch potatoes – but wait a minute, that
is anytime of the year! BIG GRIN!

Right now I have two extra dogs at our house. The Drozds sent home Lila with me, so we could go to the OKC shows. It was easier than trying to get her back and forth as they live in Texas! She and Frodo have been having a romping good time – Lila has even been allowed to sleep with us at night on the bed a couple times – I am trying not to ruin her for Lori and Nathan! HeHeHe. I also have a young Siberian named Dash from Missouri here. Dash belongs to Dawn Livesly and Stephanie Wetzel. He has both of his majors and again, it was easier to keep him from Texarkana to the OKC shows. Jessica and I have been training him in hopes of a specials career when he matures. He will get to see his moms in just a few days and I know it will be a joyful reunion.

The big Oklahoma City Summer Dog Shows starts this Thursday. I sure hope to be sharing a lot of brags with everyone! We have a lovely string of dogs and are looking forward to their successes!

Alright, going to go back to my relaxing. It’s time to work out the planning and organizing for the OKC shows!

First trail ride of 2009

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

I was honored to take part in a Jordan tradition and went on the first trail ride of the year. My foot fought this, screaming – don’t get on a horse – once up in the saddle – it screamed even more. However they put me up on Coco who had one speed and lived up to only having one speed – plus the couple beers I had helped! We had 9 of us saddled up and we had a nice relaxing afternoon!
Thanks for pushing me! I needed a change of scenery!

why do we own a sofa

Friday, February 20th, 2009

As you can see – our sofa isn’t for human comfort, but for our dog comfort! Where do we sit??? On the floor – hahahaha. That is why we have a double recliner for the humans and the sofa for the dogs – unless they get jealous and join us on the recliner (which they do do)

Other Uses for coffee filters

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

Coffee Filters are not just for

making Coffee…

1. Cover bowls or dishes when cooking in the microwave. Coffee filters make excellent covers.

2. Clean windows and mirrors. Coffee filters are lint-free so they’ll leave windows sparkling.

3. Protect China. Separate your good dishes by putting coffee filter between each dish.

4. Filter broken cork from wine. If you break the cork when opening a wine bottle, filter the wine through coffee filter.

5. Protect a cast-iron skillet. Place a coffee filter in the skillet to absorb moisture and prevent rust.

6. Apply shoe polish. Ball up a lint-free coffee filter.

7. Recycle frying oil. After frying, strain oil through sieve lined with a coffee filter.

8. Weigh chopped foods. Place chopped ingredients in a coffee filter on a kitchen scale.

9. Hold tacos. Coffee filters make convenient wrappers for messy foods.

10. Stop the soil from leaking out of a plant pot. Line a plant pot with a coffee filter to
prevent the soil from going through the drainage holes.

11. Prevent a popsicle from dripping. Poke one or two holes as needed in a coffee filter.

12. Do you think we used expensive strips to wax eyebrows?? Use strips of coffee filters.

13. Put a few in a plate and put your fried bacon, french fries, chicken fingers, etc on them. Soaks
out all the grease.

14. Keep in the bathroom. They make great razor nick fixers.

15. Use as a bowl for microwave popcorn… It will absorb the butter.

This one’s for Jessica!

OK OK, so for anyone who even knows me slightly, you know of my foot surgery, 7 weeks non weight bearing with a cast, and now physical therapy. And, for any of you who have ever done physical therapy – you know your excerises are dealing with very minute details, working muscles, tendons, ligaments, all of it to get your body back into form. One day I was telling Jessica about my marble excerise where I pick up marbles with my toes and drop them in a bowl. Very hard if your foot was immobile. Anyways, Jessica laughed and the vision of picking up marbles just keeps her giggling! Well, today, at physical therapy, I saw this page that was cut out of one of those daily calendars and I laughed and laughed and laughed and took this photo with my cell phone!
SOOOO – does this mean I am a redneck????????
BIG HUGE GRIN!

Ren’s New Do!

My Assistant Laur’en Jordan cut off her hair last week – isn’t it cute! She donated her long hair to locks of love and I am very proud of her for that!

5 Days of Ice/Snow

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

Wow – 5 days of ice/sleet/snow on the ground – finally the roads are clear and at the end of the day, you could see most of the ground. I took lots of photos of the kids out on the white stuff and made the two above collages. On my facebook account – you can see the BIG photos!
Have a great weekend!

Day 2 of Snow

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

When us Oklahomans get snow, it’s normally here 24 hrs and gone – but we are on day 2 of Snow. The sun came out and our roads got better – but our street is still solid ice. When I got home today, I went out to get a few more pictures of Frodo and his first snow and I captured this wonderful picture of Bam, in a full flight! Another one of those great one click photos! Drive safe if you have to be on the roads tonight!

first snow

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

I love waking up to a white winter wonderland! This was the first time Frodo got to see snow! And, all he wanted was to jump up on me, you could hear him saying “Mom, what is this white cold stuff?? Pick me up, I don’t like it!” I have to go to work today and hope to take more photos when I come home! For those of you who are crazy like me and have to travel – be careful.
